I picked up a Mountain Goats disc a while back & played it a few times.  It reminds me a lot of solo street-corner musicians in the college part of town, banging that guitar and singing away whether anyone is listening or not.  The music has a kind of "hell, I could do that!" feel to it, even for me, a very ham-fisted amateur guitarist & operator of a Fostex 4-track.  (Not necessarily a bad thing.)

I recommend caution.  Listen to a ton of samples first before buying.  Definitely not for everyone.
