HERE COMES THE NEW FOLK
UNDERGROUND
LOST HIGHWAYThe problem with making big statements like
the title here is that you have to back it up with
the goods. I don’t know much about Baerwald
apart from his work on Sheryl Crow’s ‘Tuesday
Night Music Club’ but there’s plenty of blurb in
the biog to back up Lost Highway’s belief. Even
if there wasn’t, the evidence is blindingly
obvious in the album itself. Although the songs
hark back to the roots of country music, rock ‘n’
roll, summer of love, (‘Bozo Weirdo Wacko
Creep’ is very Steve Miller-ish), the whole nine
yards of American music, ‘Here Comes The
New Folk Underground’ reminds me of World
Party’s ‘Goodbye Jumbo’ (especially ‘Love
No.29’), another album that successfully looked
over its shoulder for inspiration.
David Baerwald is one hell of a songwriter and
sounds capable of anything. ‘Here’ Comes...’
takes us on a journey through his musical
influences in much the same way as Ryan
Adams did with ‘Gold’, only this is better.
There’s real talent here and we could be
listening to someone who could become one of
the great American songwriters. You get the
feeling there’s a Randy Newman waiting to leap
out. CJ
