I transplanted the first tree I ever grew from scratch.
Collected the seeds balls from an old Sycamore next to Robert E Lee's house on the campus of Washington and Lee University in western Virginia in March 2003 during the beginning stages of our then sabbatical which eventually ended by encompassing 13k of the US by via the highways , byways and interstates.
This seedling was one of two that germinated in western Montana during the summer of 2003. This spring I was able to germinate another larger batch of which 14 have survived their first summer. The fella I put in the ground monday grew to be about 3 1/2 feet tall this summer and had a good rootball. Or so I thought, not being an expert.
They are purported to grow to a height of 70 feet in 20 years time, meaning we may having a pretty decent shade tree as early as 3 years from now. If you have never seen a sycamore in its full glory, you should. Especially a mature sycamore on a crisp clear full mooned winter night. The bark can glow like a ghost, such a sight.
Please share my joy, and something that is real and valuable to this old fool.
