if I had a gay child and some idiot got up and called her the names that Keyes did, and then heard the sort of thoughts of people like Santorum, Falwell and other conservatives, I'd be kicking them right in the ass - regardless if they were members of the same party or not.

Though muddled, Kerry was trying to bring up the hypocritical contradiction of the Repuglican party - that they want to create a change in the US Constitution that can harm their own relatives for purely political reasons. 

And then to top it off, you have two parents (the Cheney's) who have refused to criticize people who have said much worse things than Kerry did, simply because of political party affiliation.
