Do you think going to fight in Vietnam was a good idea? No
Do you think it was poorly fought and planned? Yes and No. US soldiers fought valiantly and did the best they could under the circumstances. Planning was poor in that their training was not geared to jungle guerilla type warfare. My understanding is also, that the US troops hands were held back on several occasions, not allowing them to "win". The powers that be wanted to perpetuate the conflict, reasons stemming from corporate interests in the military-industrial complex.
Do you think it was good idea to pack up and leave even though millions were later slaughtered after we left? Yes. And what data do you have to support that "millions were slaughtered"? If so, how can we know if "millions" wouldn't have been slaughtered anyways if we hadn't gone there in the first place.
Do you think we should pack up and leave Iraq? No. We cannot leave immediately, it's too late for that. We have made a mess of that country and due to the insurgence, a military presence will need to remain, and there of course will be more and more casualties. However, we should help to rebuild. I think these efforts have been started, but we will need to do a lot more, until the infrastructure is such that the country can truly be self-ruling. Allawi's recent comments are a joke. Any elections forthwith will be sham elections held for the benefit of George Bush. True elections in a presumably free, and democratic Iraq are years if not a decade or so away.
Do you think the same slaughter could happen in Iraq if we left now? Here you are referring to the "millions" you mentioned in Vietnam, correct? The current slaughter (and it is only just beginning), in Iraq will continue whether we stay or go. If we leave immediately or soon, it will escalate more profoundly. I think we will need troops to stay if we are going to fulfill the promise of helping to rebuild/restructure the country. We owe them. We invaded a sovereign nation.
