I'm not defending the Communist Party in Vietnam and what they did after the war. My point is that all of our involvement, investment, and intervention in VN did nothing to forestall the inevitable. We really were powerless to intercede in that guerrilla/civil war. How did the deaths of 56,000 Americans contribute to a satisfactory resolution?I really don't see any better outcome in our present situation.
Ironically, I understand that now, after all is said and done, Vietnam, like China, has adopted a sort of "Market-Leninism" and at least some of the Vietnamese are enjoying looser restrictions on free trade. Our Washington State Governor, Gary Locke, just returned from a trade mission in Hanoi.
I will be traveling to VN this winter and will plan to report back to dbis on my trip.
