Yes, the record has a very retro, early seventies feel to it. Ethan did a great job producing this record. I love the striped, bare-to-the-bones production. I guess he recorded the drums with only one mike. They sound great! Ethan does most of the instrument playing as well. Plus, Sara Watkins from Nickel Creek guests on two tracks and Stephen Still's daughter- Jennifer on another. BTW, Stephen's music is the reason Ray first started playing music.
I hear live, is where this man truly comes alive and his voice makes an amazing impression on one's ear, heart and soul.. I bought my tickets for Badly Drawn Boy next month, here in town. The main reason for me buying these tickets, is because Ray's opening for BDB on his West/Southwest leg of his tour.
I also picked up Dan Zanes new folk collection"Parades And Panoramas - 25 Songs Carl Sandburg For The American Songbag". Love the way Dan records his CD's with a ton of guests, friends and family. Plus the CD packaging and design is well thought out. Great liner notes, lyrics and guitar chords for each song. Purchased a Howie Beck CD, as well as The Thrills new one. I'm really digg'n it on first listen. Wasn't able to purchase Michelle Shocked's reissue of "Arkansas Traveler" Nobody had it in stock. Just like the first thre reissues. It took a week or two for them to show up in Phoenix. I guess Miss Shocked's label uses mules to ship her products out west!
Cheers all, try to listen to some music and escape the politcal bullshit for awhile. It really works, and I feel great!- Kevin
