Similar to veteran rock star Tom Petty, whose new album "The Last DJ" shreds the politics and priorities of the music industry, Mellencamp is disillusioned with a business that values sex appeal more than songs and is fueled by short-lived -- if not disposable -- careers. ("I don't know that I'd dedicate a whole album to the topic," he says. "I'd just as soon (complain) about it over the phone.")
