I have read a bit of the recent Dalai Lhama's book called On Death and Living a Better Life. He writes about when one is dying, friends, family etc should not be wailing and sobbing and carrying on, but if speech is necessary it should be soothing and happy because if one is in a relaxed, non stresssed plane, the passage is not terrifying and much smoother. Also, one shouldn't be on any drugs, pain killer or otherwise so that the passage is clearer. Not quite sure where the passage leads to, though.
