A recent gallup poll showed that most americans want more cowbell.
I saw BOC open for RUSH. I think I recall that enormous Gong. That drummer may not have been using the exact same one but from my recollection from 20 years ago...there was a monster gong there.
From my experience, an 18 inch gong will be sufficiently loud and deep for most applications, but visually, an 18 inch gong leaves much to be desired.
I saw Mr. Sting back in 88 and there was a little gong used in that show and although it sounded good...it sure looked stupid when the percussionist had to double over to hit the "gong-ette" on the floor of the stage.
