Well a cornerstone of my faith is that he suffered for the saved and unsaved alike. That said - forgive the plagiarization - the movies' a story without an arc (I didn't say that the first time, but that's why I wasn't moved)...i.e. Henry Hill gets relocated and renamed in Goodfellas -at least there's an arc - there's numerous ones in the Bible with numerous people...For what it's worth, I love this historical (2000 years removed - who else do we have - King Tut?) man Jesus, not only for the miracles, not only for the signs, but for the kindness and the example - but it seemed as though Gibson was making this film to remind someone that Jesus was not Ghandi. He suffered for our salvation. "For I am low in heart" - Jesus Christ. Even if it's not what you believe - it's what HE believed and died for. Please forgive the shorthand..
