Interesting, Reg.  Keith Jarrett's trio has been around for quite some time.  It might interest you to know that Jack deJohnette is quite a piano virtuoso in his own right, and if you want to hear him play some beautiful things, check out the Gateway series (ongoing project he has with John Abercrombie on guitar and Dave Holland on bass).  He always manages to do at least a track or so on those, of course when not chairing the drums and percussion.  ECM I believe has released most of the CD's by Gateway.  Buy ANY of them...I promise you will not be dissapointed.   The only other virtuoso drummer that also plays/played piano that I know of (I'm sure there are others), was Jaco Pastorius.  Aside from his pioneering mastership (Godship) as an electric bass player, he started on drums, and he did actually play drums for a few tracks on Heavy Weather, and I think a few other Weather Report songs (to my ears..he was an amazing drummer)..but he also played a gorgeous piano.

Now, while we're on the topic of piano, piano trios etc..(and I know there are a sea of piano masters out there..), you might want to check out (and I am just throwing a few things out here..):

1. Gonzalo Rubalcaba (especially Live from Mt.Fuji with John Pattituci and Jack deJohnette 1992 Bluenote).  Cuban player...very intense percussive chops..blazing.  Does a version of Imagine by John Lennon..tres cool.

2. Andrew Hill (Smokestack 1963 Bluenote..don't know if this is still in print).  I love Andrew, 'cause he plays a little bit "out" all the time, but still swings.  I think this one has Roy Haynes on drums and Richard Davis on bass.

3.  Cecil Taylor (anything...but especially Air above Mountains..live solo...kinda like Keith Jarrett on acid, but soooo much more interesting...and I do love Keith (but not all that groaning, and grunting that he does).

Finally..please check out this group from Canada.  My old friend Henry Heillig (went to summer camp with him), became quite a well known Jazz bassist in Toronto, and I must say his group is fabulous.  The group is called Heillig Manoeuvre (heh heh), and they have 2 CD's out.  You might really like their pianist, and his new guitar player is outta this world.  The drummer, is this amazing player named Howard Gaul, whose worldclass designs and graphics (I think his "day job") adorn the groups CD covers.   On this one, Reg, take it on faith, order both CD's, and if you do not LOVE them, I will re-imburse you for them...trust Uncle Geenie on this one:
