and last night I went to see Frank Marino and Mahogony Rush. .......and the memories come rushing back like the hot kiss at the end of a wet fist..... I think it was 1975 when I last saw Frank Marino and M.R., I had driven my trusty old 1965 VW ( bug ) to Atlanta with a couple of friends with tickets in hand for Aerosmith at The Omni. ( tickets were $5.50 ). As we had arrived on Friday for a Satiddy show I immediately checked into the schedule for Alex Cooley's Electric Ballroom. M.R. was on the bill and we suddenly had high hopes for our Friday night. This night was almost surreal. There was an opening act ( The Law I believe ) and then Frank came on, then The Law and Frank came on again. During the second round for the opening act a fellow strolled in who looked just like ( and may have been ) Dickey Betts. He walks right up to and onto the stage and plugs in during the bands set. This guy starts waillin' away on his big white guitar when a member of The Law steps back and unplugs this uninvited visitor. Well, the Dickey dude sneaks back, plugs back in and then starts grinning and jamming. A few more volleys of this transpire with both the band and the Dickey dude starting to get a bit pissed. Eventually the Dickey dude gives up, approaches the mic and says "y'all don't know who the *#@!* I am do you?", he then proceeds to throw his beautiful big white guitar off the stage and to the floor and then stomps out of the building. ( His girlfriend, wife or whatever comes back and retrieves the axe a few minutes later ) Well, as if this wasn't enough excitement for one evening.........Frank Marino and his crew hit the stage for their second set and who should walk in the joint but Aerosmith, pre-clean and sober era. The guys were obviously in a party mood but well behaved all the same. I still have Steven Tyler's autograph on an Electric Ballroom cocktail napkin. It was interesting to watch when Steven left the building as he simply reached out to a girl on the steps and it was as if she just floated to her feet and along with him as you would expect in that rock star lifestyle.Frank and the boys rocked the house for sure, I still recall his "Star Spangled Banner" burning up the night air. I didn't know they were active again.
