thanks to all for your insightful and/or inciteful postings. how did i not find this site till a month ago? i've been listening since boomtown.great to read the political discussion. up here in alaska we have 6 recognized parties, but everything is run by republicans and democrats. voter apathy combined with close races turn the 4 small parties (green, libertarian, alaskan independence, republican moderate) into a crucial % of voters. our upcoming gubernatorial election has 6 candidates on the ballot. (in 1990, alaskans elected wally hickel--a former republican governor turned alaskan independence candidate.) avoiding a longwinded description of our political climate (which i'm ill-qualified to give), i just wanted to say that many people are disgusted with frank murkowski (R) and fran ulmer (D), but they won't vote for one of the 4 other names on the ballot because...well, you know the story. lesser of two evils. it's a really self-perpetuating setup. better than one party...except a one-party system will get overthrown when necessary. our two parties make it kinda seem like choice. (alaska just had a feeble attempt at instituting Instant Runoff Voting in non-gubernatorial elections, but it was voted down.)i expect the archives have more articulate musings on these things, but the toricelli postings from davidm and others made me want to write.
-------------------------------------------also, thanks to anyone who helped in getting
DB's writing up for perusal.yesterday i read two great web-offerings from musicians that i like. DB was one of them. the other is very random scribblings by john darnielle of the mountain goats. very unlike DB, but gifted with the language. anybody else know the mountain goats? the music is really spare. guitar and darnielle's voice and lyrics. amusing liner notes occasionally in latin or swedish. this year's album is called "all hail west texas."the amusing stuff i read---which on the surface seems to have very little to do with the album---
