That new film does sound interesting. I appreciate your thoughtful & thorough take on Donnie Darko. You even pointed out a couple of things I hadn’t noticed before. And yes this is a film that WILL stay with you once you've seen it.
You called it a comedy /satire, which is probably the closest thing to true, but that makes it one of the blackest comedies I think I’ve seen. And I love black humor.
You mentioned “American Beauty” which got me to thinking right away about another suburban nightmare tale called “Happiness” by Todd Solandz . If you haven’t seen it I highly recommend it. No monsters just a lot of taboo’s and again another great cast.
The music in DD (especially the Mad World cut) is great. Both Jake & Maggie Gyllenhaal are great in their parts. My only complaint was Drew Barrymore, whom I really like she’s just to distracting here. On the other hand I begrudgingly admit to finding Noah Wyle‘s work choices getting more interesting.
You dead on about the dust jacket description being misleading. I think I’m going to reintroduce this to my wife and see if I can’t sway her into sharing this nugget with me.
