Well, I will tell you Come and See will haunt you. It is one of those films that when you see it, parts of it will suddenly come back to you in various moments. At least, that is what it does to me. 

When I first saw it, I was drawn into the story but also, I was just blown away by how incredible the filmmaking was. So, on the first watch the horrors of the story mingled with the joy of seeing such an incredible film. I'll confess for a long time I wanted to be a filmmaker. 

It is about horror and trauma. It does not celebrate violence but instead, examines the toll it takes. The reason I thought of it when I was watching images of people fleeing Tehran was, there are scenes in the film of displaced people fleeing their homes, wandering off to who knows where because where do you go? But off they go, generally many all in the same direction.

One of the reasons I want people to see it is just that it is an amazing film. When a film like that gets made, people should see it. Of course, the people that I would most want to see it are the exact people that would likely never watch it. Those gung-ho "Yeah, let's bomb the living shit out of all those countries and turn the desert to glass!" kind of folks.  

It's all in Come and See, what happens when you dehumanize people, turn them into symbols, upon which you feel absolutely free to unleash the worst cruelties you can imagine. I know with you, Brent, you don't have to watch a movie to understand it.

If Putin and Trump had a movie night, and if I was running that movie night, I would show them Come and See. It would be the very first film that came to mind for me to show them. I wonder if it would have any impact on them. I feel like Putin would get it but probably would turn it into a reason why he needs to attack and kill Ukrainians. Trump being the hideous dullard he is, probably would sleep through it.
