So well said, Reg.  Traveling in the world of narcissism I see up close the transactional mindset that spirals out of control.  You're reminding me of Robert Reich's most recent contribution where he stated people may be fed up with the government but they still believe in our system of government.  I'm waiting for the charismatic leader that can expertly disentangle the two and be the vanguard for a new era of intellectual integrity.  Championing our system of government seems like a good start.
