Wally asked if I had an alternative to the new biometric national I.D. cards (driver's license):

Wally:
Since my particular expertise is not in the area of biometrics, I do not have anything as such on the drawing board, so to speak. However, the following has certainly occured to me regarding this matter.
The whole issue with security and identity cards is solely to prevent counterfeiting, correct?
With this new system that has been proposed, every carrier of these cards is assumed to be guilty only and before they can prove their innocence. How exactly THAT can be accomplished is something that isn't even addressed by this proposed legislation.
While our government leaves the borders WIDE OPEN, they are seeking to impose even more stricter control on all of us citizens who have never and will never break a single law. Except for an occasional traffic ticket, I have never been accused of doing anything untoward in my entire life.
But, the next time I renew my identification card (not license, I am no longer able to drive), I will be submitting myself to a strict form of security that is completely above and beyond the level that should be reasonably imposed in such a situation.
The ironic part is that this will not make anyone safer than they already are, and it will not prevent the true criminals from getting their hands on something that will sanatize their criminal records. This is because, historically, the same people who make security devices, also make the items that will defeat those security systems. A perfect example of this is the cable TV descrambler boxes that are kicked out the back door, to make some extra money by selling to a market who would NEVER buy the legitimate product.
I do not know what the TRUE ANSWER is to make us all safer, but I DO KNOW that if you want to make yourself and your family safe, that is YOUR job, and NOT the responsibility of those you elect to public office.
Benjamin Franklin has a quote about this very subject, which paraphrased, is as follows:
"Those who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security."
--- Benjamin Franklin - U.S. Statesman
That kind of says it better than I ever could.
Now, whether or not anyone reading this quote grasps the depth of its' meaning to today's world is out of my hands.
