I fully agree. Though the author of that phrase could have meant it in the Hitlerian sense, more so than the current conotation that suggests people should stand and defend one's turf or they'll face certain death.
It's good to see that we're opening a debating society for 8 year olds the response to the question "Is left wing culture patriotic" isn't met with a few nuggets of truth but the repeated counter-question "Is patriotism patriotic".
You might not realise it, but you're as much the Great Satan as I am and the Great Satan that Bush is. If your accent sounds a certain way and your passport says 'USA' you might as well not have held any progressive political views and got a job as Karl Rove's case carrier. The fundies believe in equal opportunites when it comes to the slaughter of the infidel.
Whilst the moral undertones are truly admirable in your reading of the situation, they won't save you. If you'd rather die knowing that you stood between the combative 'sides' and joined neither, then more power to you and thank Christ you stayed out of politics. This might seem hard to believe (this goes for most people here) as much as we disagree, I've no wish to see any of you meet a premature demise. You won't be part of a 4th Reich, but unless you have another *solution* that can substitute for this current 'War On Terror' then I suggest you get out of the grey area or the whole ship could go down.

Honest dissent and other solutions are one thing, but if we allow political correctness and liberal pandering to dictate how we fight this war, then we're going to lose this and this pathetic debacle can join the African Embassy bombings, USS Cole and the shootout in Mogadishu.
It won't come the fact that the leadership was weak, it comes from the fact that there are people who think they are so patriotic they'd rather see America defeated than live with themselves if they had to see colored people be wiped out by the US Army due to their terroristic sympathies and leanings.
If America is the Great Satan, then Europe's always an option. Or perhaps we should give California back to Mexico and you can go back to live in your socialist utopia. But then most people of that ilk want to have their cake and eat it, since they're too lazy/stupid/cowardly to get out of the place they profess to distrust because they might have to face the reality of Socialim and have to live in a 'poorer' existence. (and that would never do!)
Finally (to go back to your prison illustration) would you still stay neutral if the Nation Of Islam was going to kill you whatever you chose to do?
