"I heard the news today, oh boy."
(sigh)
My daughter and I were watching the news over our Cheerios this morning when CNN reported that George Harrison had passed away. She didn't stop eating but must have noticed that I was staring motionless at the screen for a moment.
"What?" she asked. (she's ten.)
"Kat, he was one of the Beatles." I said, scooping a spoonful of cereal.
"Oh. The band, right?" she asked with nothing but sincerity.
"Yes. You know all the musicians that I get really excited about listening to and have a lot of respect for?"
"Yeah, I guess."
"He helped make my heroes as excited about music as I am."
"So, he's a pretty big deal, huh?"
"Yep." I mumbled as she finished her ceral and popped into the bathroom for her mother to help her curl her hair. She turned to smile at me as if to say, "I don't get it, but that's ok." Unfortunately her generation doesn't yet have someone to compare with. I guess my generation doesn't either. I don't have every beatles album, but a few George Harrison records can be found here. I always respected his ability to be able to seem so at peace amist such an incredible event life.
