Apparently, a friend of Joseph Arthur sent a copy of his demo tape to Peter Gabriel. He liked what he heard, called Joseph and left a message on his answering machine inviting him to record an album on the Real World label. How's that for humble beginnings! The result of their first recording effort was his debut album- Big City Secrets. His best of three in my opinion.
In regards to the Real World label, there are many wonderful musicians to be heard. My favorite and most highly recommended would have to be Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn. He was a Pakistani Qwalli singer who we unfortunately lost last year. His voice is absolutely hypnotizing. I believe his last album, Night Songs, a collaboration with Canadian multi-instrumentalist Michael Brook, is probably his most accessible. Truly beautiful.
Speaking of collaborations, try Jam Nation. The name says it all. A collection of musicians from several nations jamming. Funky, groovy, tasty beats. Also give Sheila Chandra a try. May take a few listenings to appreciate but well worth it. And then there's Geoffrey Oryama. The label is full of great music. Too many to list here. Go to realworld.on.net and explore. Happy hunting!
