Hello David,

Very excited about another release of AFM (is it still $20?) -- I've been dying to hear some new material since the release of "Triage." I first started listening to you when I was about 12 years old in South Africa, where I grew up. Did you know that "Welcome to the Boomtown" made #1 in the top 40 charts there? The album was championed by a local DJ and others started picking up on it ("Swallowed by the Cracks" made it to #12 in the charts if memory serves...)

I heard a song of yours playing over the end credits of "The Pledge" and I'm hoping that it's included on AFM as it sounded really good.

Thanks for the tip about Emmitt Tinley, I'd not heard of him before, but I'll check him out when he comes to Boston on the 14th.

Here, in turn, is a tip for you: have you heard Joseph Arthur? His album "Come to Where I'm From" on Peter Gabriel's Real World label is astonishingly good. I really think you'll adore this record. Lyrically it's very, very, very dark stuff -- just his voice and layers of acoustic and electric guitars over drum loops (great production work by T Bone Burnett). Very atmospheric, often sparse and minimalistic. I'm a journalist, and when I interviewed Joseph Arthur recently I recommended that he check out your albums too, as I think you'd both have a lot of common ground musically. He's also an interesting painter too.

Another music recommendation: Doves and their album "Lost Souls." Full of musical ephiphanies. Gorgeous -- every track.

And, finally, a question: any idea what Toni Childs is up to these days? I wish she'd release some new material -- she's missed.

Take care,
Stephen Humphries
