This was printed in the Onion (my personal favorite news source, along with the Daily Show) yesterday. The columnist who wrote it, Dan Savage, is outspokenly gay, which you need to know to get what he's talking about. Anyway, I thought it was a very astute observation, so I figured I'd share:
>Did everyone see Ricky Martin dancing with George W. Bush >in front of the Lincoln Memorial last week? I felt the >same shame watching Ricky dance with W. that blacks felt >watching Ben Vereen tap-dance for Ronald Reagan. Ricky >Martin denies he's gay, of course, but come on. Ricky >hasn't been arrested in a men's room with a cock in his >mouth, but it's gonna happen sooner or later. (And when it >does, gay magazines will slap Ricky's picture on their >covers and declare him a hero in the struggle for gay >rights.) Anyway, the full reality of the new Bush era >didn't hit me until I sat watching the closet-case shake >his bon-bon with the worst thing that's happened to this >country since, well, ever. It's gonna be a long, ugly four >years, kids.
Even if you don't agree with his assessment of the next four years, it's a pretty great description of the spectacle that is our inauguration process, don't you think?
