David & Readers: I was happy to find this site, having been a fan of DB's work since the mid 80's. I was excited to see DB using mp3s as a way of allowing his fans to enjoy his live tracks, interviews, etc.. I was OVERJOYED to see he actually provided the system to distribute his CDs through a tree system. If only more artists could understand the benefits of these open systems.
The next level is to allow me (or any number of others) to host static servers which contain Shortened versions of your discs for others to download and burn their own CDs. Unlike MP3, Shorten is a lossless compression scheme. Meaning that when you decompress a .shn file it is of the EXACT same full fidelity of the source material. MP3 strips away some of the sound, never to be replaced again. Take a look here, www.etree.org, and you'll see hundreds of folks trading Dave Matthews Band, Grateful Dead, Phish and other bands via shorten. The other great thing about shn files is that they have a built-in checksum system which confirms the file you received is the same as the one sent. Shorten decoders are available for most platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux & Vic-20)
I'm volunteering my server space and dedicated bandwidth to hosting a DB .shn server so any and all could download the music he wants heard. Now if only I had the discs...
