This little story seems relevant. I bought 2 copies of AFM and sent one to a friend as a gift. He sent me an e-mail back, incuding this description of a show in Houston:
saw david & david in a small club here in 87 i think, when they toured on their album. one of my favorite memories: after the last number a fat, sloshed drunk from the
audience staggered up to the stage and threw down two twenties and screamed
"here's forty bucks play boomtown again" baerwald picked up the two twenties, threw 'em back and said "buy a whore asshole" a choice rememberance
