On the most cynical perspective of this one - how many well-paid healthcare/insurance executives were really hoping for the killer to have taken his own life or otherwise died, thus, avoiding a trial that will allow this killer to remain in the news for some time?

I think a trial is the last thing these people want to happen and it wouldn't surprise me at all that the major motive push will be how the killer had back surgery and apparently couldn't get erections.  I'm sure they want that to be the narrative motive rather than the earlier one of being upset over the mistreatment of his grandparents.
