I'd like to add - the decline of critical thinking skills. I went to catholic schools & graduated high school in 1973 (Yes, I'm old). Back when I was in 6th grade, a couple of my fellow students transferred to the local junior high school. It was brought up and discussed in class, and one of the things the teacher (a nun) said with pride was "Catholic schools teach you how to think, public schools teach you what to think". I won't argue the merits of the statement, but it has stuck with me. Steve Allen wrote "Dumbth" about dumbing down our educational system in 1998.
The gradual shift in our school systems from primarily academic skills to functional skills turns out unquestioning drones, ready for corporate and government control.
