I do think I sometimes fall into the trap of just assuming people know things. With Trump, I think people criticize me for thinking he is just so stupid he can't possibly get anything right. I am guilty of that, I do think the man is jaw-droppingly dumb. I do struggle to see how he can overcome his own stupidity and I am astounded his followers don't see how idiotic he is. So really, I should have thought of the idea he thinks "seeking asylum" basically means looking for a mental institution. That is hilariously dumb. 

However, yes, I guess I foolishly thought that was not the case, I just thought he loves to be vile because he knows he can get attention and upset people by being vile. In fact, with his campaign in trouble and flailing about helplessly to try to find a way to attack Harris/Walz and regain some media attention, I fully expect him to get even more vile, intentionally, because he knows the fastest way into the media spotlight is to do something that really upsets people. It's always been the one thing he was good at.
