I don't disagree with that. I think he does make the effort to shmooze his followers or people with money and/or power. He does know enough that he wants to appeal to them. Underneath, he hates them for the simple reason that he knows he should shmooze them and this actually makes him angry. 

Trump does believe in a hierarchy and that if you are on a level lower than someone else, through money or power or probably to him number of followers on the internet, well, he does believe you should be kissing the ass above you. That is in him. This is why he cowered when he was onstage with Putin. People say he also always cowered around Roger Ailes and Rupert Murdoch. His natural instinct is to bend the knee to those above him and it is why he grows so furious when people he believes are beneath him won't do it for him. It is why he likes to hire people that will kiss his ass. He believes that is the treatment he deserves. 

As much as Trump understand the principal that he needs to appeal to some people, he also just is such a buffoon he will blow those moments as well.
