OK, again we are in agreement. Every sane person should want to distance themselves from Bibi and the ugly way they are handling this. No question. Here's the thing I would ask you to think about. Right after the October attack by Hamas, the story is that the first thing Bibi and his crew discussed was nuking Gaza, seriously, they felt they were justified in doing so. Option 2 was bomb the living hell out of Gaza and then fight a ground war. 

Now, let's assume the US had that info, and they knew Bibi and his party members were considering the nuclear option, obviously nobody wants that. Kill a couple million people in one swipe. So, thankfully they decide on option two and they start bombing the shit our of Gaza. At first, nobody was negotiating with the Israelis, they allowed them to respond to the attack on them. 

So, the first thing in a negotiation is to get a seat at the table, then to try to explore what leverage you have.

Let's say, Bibi flat out told them "We are going to wipe out Hamas, even if it involves nuking Gaza." pretty sure that is the position they laid out. 

What if, as a contingent to taking the nuclear option off the table, the agreement was we will provide you with all the other weapons you need as long as you do not nuke Gaza? I mean, that could be part of what is in play here. Bibi and Likud have stuck by the idea that nobody, absolutely nobody is going to stop them from going after Hamas. So, what if what has held them back from doing worse is that the US keeps them stocked up with other weapons? 

What if as part of negotiations with other nations in the region, US diplomats have said "We are supplying Israel with weapons to prevent any use of nukes and to show we do not want other nations entering this fight." 

What I am saying here is, and I know shit about it, but what if providing weapons is how we are preventing an escalation in the region and preventing the insanity of using nukes? This is entirely possible as part of the strategy. Providing the weapons to Israel tells other countries to stay out of it and prevents Bibi and his Likud buddies from losing their shit and nuking the place. Netanyahu is not a rational actor, a fair dealer, nor concerned with what the West thinks of him. 

Nobody sane wants to back the bastard but we do want to have his ear. Maybe the weapons are part of why we do.
