it's ok for us to disagree Andi. I know you have to invest a lot more in either blue or red where I don't have to so I can be more detached from his agenda.

Very gracious of you, allowing her to disagree with you like that.

Perspective taking here is very much tied to one's destiny geographically isn't it? Or is it?

It is easier to maintain an ironic distance from a physical distance, isn't it? This phenomenon is sometimes referred to as the courage of being out of range. Our fight against Trumpism is not distant here. This is not a matter of Team Blue or Team Red. This is not a sporting event. This is Weimar versus the Nazis. You want to unleash Sauron and the Orcs? Continue to normalize Trumpism as you do here.

I seem to recall that he bypassed Congress last week to secure more ammunition for Israel's war which I think if Trump had done it people would be losing their shit here about it. Or if Trump did it for some other fascist mate the page here would be full of indignation about him. (Trump did do the same thing, but it was 2 billion dollars in weapons, not 103 million and it was Saudi Arabia, not Israel.)

People are losing their shit about that, believe me, including people in the Biden Administration. I'm horrified by it, myself, and without further information it looks both wrong and cataclysmically stupid. But an important difference here is that we are screaming, and he hears that. On the other hand, Trump, his staff, his base and his supporters would not have any problem at all with killing every Palestinian in Gaza, in fact they continue to cry out for more blood.

From AP News:

"This week, Biden warned that Israel was “losing support because of the indiscriminate bombing,” and intimated that a change in Netanyahu’s extreme right-wing government might prove the answer.

The president’s comments brought a flood of questions as to whether Biden was accusing Israel of war crimes. “I don’t think Biden made a mistake,” Daalder said. “I think he believes this. … He’s been quite clear that he is absolutely fed up with the Israeli government.”

Hamas was going nowhere. If Netanyahu had taken a step back and thought how can we do this with minimal civilian casualties he'd have won hearts and minds in a way that isn't happening now. And killing hostages...ffs...

In what reality was Netanyahu ever going to take a step back?  In what reality would he have been stopped, or even slowed down, with his base behind him howling for blood? In what reality has he ever cared about Palestinian civilians, or even global opinion? His worldview has never included concepts like winning hearts and minds and his base is still screaming for more death and tragedy.

He's (Netanyahu) sickening to look at. As is Putin.

Yeah, I find them nauseating too. Doesn't that make us just special?

And they actually think this will destroy Hamas.

Who thinks that? Nobody thinks that.

All it has become is a breeding ground for more hatred and vengenace. There are Palestinian kids now growing up who hate Israel and will be sworn to revenge. and on and on.

Yes, obviously. The question is: What do you expect this embattled president to do? What miracle do you propose he accomplish? The next question is: Is it possible that Biden is playing the few cards he has, in the hopes of using this period to liberate the world from Netanyahu altogether? Of getting rid of the Netanyahu coalition?

phew...rant over!

If you want to do something other than rant you can send donations to the Red Cross, or even a Baerwald family project, helping Palestinians in Jerusalem.

The Sur Baher Project
The Truman Institute, in collaboration with The Paul Baerwald School of Social Work and Social Welfare at the Hebrew University and the Jerusalem Municipality established a project for enhancing the communal and social status of Arab communities in the city. The first stage of the project focuses on Sur Baher, an Arab village in the South East of the Jerusalem metropolitan area.
