Critics drove him nuuuuuts, and I can see why, actually—being primarily writers rather than musicians, they generally tended to focus almost entirely on the words and a form of 'musical correctness' which always kind of sounded like the Replacements to him, an approach he just flat out disagreed with, on top of getting his feelings hurt! The LA Times' Robert Hilburn was downright hostile to him at a party.
