I actually think we're seeing the flowering of power amongst the ultra-right/Libertarian John Birch-style think tanks. Look for the roots of far-right activism and you will find the Council for National Policy and Heritage Foundation and their offshoots like the Federalist Society and the Claremont Foundation.
