Icon I completely understand where you are coming from...

I guess to me, more than wanting most Americans to understand world events, I'd like them to grasp why the principals their own country is founded on are so important and what they mean. My ignorance would be, I thought the people of this country mostly understood these things and agreed upon what they are. Turns out, a good percentage of the population does not understand them nor agree on what they are.

I think for many of the right, what the United States is based upon are three basic things, their god, their guns, and their freedom of speech. That's it. Simple, concise, easy for them to remember. Beyond that, nothing else matters and is not important. What they miss is that a variety of institutions in government are what make those things part of the promise of living here...and nobody is working harder to destroy those institutions than groups of Republicans across this country. Once the institutions fall, well, those three items they hold so dear are no longer promised and can be taken at the whim of an authoritarian like Trump, or DeSantis, or any one of these nuts.

Trump has declared, though I am absolutely certain he has never read it, the rest of the Constitution, tricks. He has said we should throw it out. He and his lawyers even recently declared that as president he did not promise in his oath to uphold and follow the Constitution. This is not mentioned much in any of the media and it is stunningly absurd that it is not. It disqualifies him from holding office because he feels part of his job is not to uphold or defend the Constitution. He and his lawyers are literally saying that when he was president, he had no obligation to stand up for and defend the principals this country was founded on. They openly said this...and he remains the leading candidate for president for the Republican party, and Congress is full of ass kissers that will do anything he says, including the new guy they just made Speaker.

That to me is a simple story and one I very much would like the voters of this country to fully grasp before they go out and cast a vote. How to tell that story to them so that they fully grasp it?

Honestly, I don't know and that makes me feel sad...sad about myself because I want to be able to tell that story to someone that is considering Trump and have it make sense to them.

I don't know if explaining to many Americans what is happening in the Middle East is even possible. I have a really hard time grasping it and I think I am, hopefully, not an idiot.

I know that we have to simplify the stories and I know that when you do, often times, all the nuance is left out. I think though that you are right, hopefully, if we can make the story simple we can get people interested. I don't know how interested because I think some people have more of an interest in people, the world, other cultures, politics than others.

As I believe Peter has pointed out here, some of us grow up...well...lucky. We grow up in an atmosphere that promotes curiosity about these things. So, I think most of us here did that and we do have an interest in understanding all of this...many others just don't. Can we break through to them? I have no idea.
