I was never a parrot head. Never paid much attention to Jimmy Buffett. The one thing he did that I did enjoy was he did the music for a film called Rancho Deluxe which stars Jeff Bridges and Sam Waterson and Slim Pickens makes an appearance as the Columbo of cattle detectives. It's a funny film that seems like it would have been a huge influence on the Coen brothers about two young guys that steal and sell cattle to pay their bills. Of course there is one cattle baron who is weird and pompous that they really enjoy stealing from. Buffett and his band also appear in the film playing in a local bar.

A funny side note, it had been about 30 years since I had seen some of my old pals from high school. They contacted me out of the blue, just calling me one day and saying they had "found" me and were coming to see me that night. Much to my horror, while seeing old friends again was very nice, these guys had all become Buffett fans in the intervening years. They were sort of stunned when I said I'd rather be set on fire and put out with a sledgehammer than go to a Jimmy Buffett show.

We have gone to a series of shows though, including The Who, Bruce Springsteen, and Steely Dan and the Eagles as well as a Led Zeppelin cover band we saw together in the 1980s, who are still excellent.

The other night the Eagles dedicated Don Henley's song The Boys of Summer to Mr. Buffett. Nothing against Jimmy, I just have never had an urge to waste away in Margaritaville.
