So, watched the first episode of this new HBO show. Enjoyed it, but kind of odd how it is done almost like a sitcom or as if Mel Brooks was spoofing the Watergate break-in and what led up to it. Hunt and Liddy are played like cartoon caricatures, doing all kinds of goofball stuff.
Dressing in funny clothes, wigs, fake teeth, doing funny walks, all in the first episode. The comedy is a bit broad for what I thought this would be.
Liddy has Hunt and his wife over to his home for dinner and fairly quickly starts blaring a record of a Hitler speech and they all have to shout above it to talk and then some kids egg Liddy's house while this is going on and he goes out to go after them and you can see his shenanigans out the windows behind Hunt and his wife (who is horrified at what is going on). Liddy returns from chasing the kids with his pistol in his hand, of course.
I mean, I see the fun in portraying these guys as clowns but it enters Austin Powers territory. I get the humor that is here in the material but they may be taking it a bit too far. Anybody else checking out this HBO show and have any thoughts on it? Fair game, that the stupidity we are watching now with Republicans far outdoes what is in this show, so, maybe that is why the tone here verges on slapstick.
