Well, I don't know about the magazines, but I can say that I don't know much about what is going on with music. I don't watch any awards shows and don't hear much new music.
I've seen and read things about how new songs are essentially worthless because they are not, for the most part, written or composed using musical instruments anymore. It is done on a computer. You can listen to Rick Beato and friends discuss this in loads of youtube videos.
I just watched him talking to Tim Pierce last night and the conversation was about how songs are concocted today. Same beat, same chord progressions used over and over again.
However, I also watched a video not long ago with Bruce Hampton talking about the state of music and he was not concerned, saying things just move in cycles.
I think music just is a requirement in life and it allows and helps create a state of joy in people. If there is one thing we need more of, that's it. Yeah, I am friends with a lot of kids and quite honestly, they like to share their music with me. Most of it, I don't like at all but I do like, as you with your daughters, seeing the kids getting into it.
They do ask me to play music for them and they will listen to it and they like some of it. I think it is all a matter of what they are introduced to.
My brother's daughter, she's 6, loves bagpipe music. When she hears it, she wants it cranked up. I assume this is from my mom playing all kinds of fiddle and bagpipe stuff for her. Either that or Mick has worked up some sort of brainwashing program he has unleashed on the children of the world. Slightly unnerving when I walk into my mother's house and my niece is blaring bagpipe tunes and dancing like some mad drunken Shire dwarf.
