Thanks David. It still intrigues me why Gustave went to the trouble of writing out the entire poem. It's very long and took up eleven pages in his diary. It is the only poem in there so did it perhaps resonate with him?

Given the number of ladies' addresses (some notes including birthdays and one even a ring size), maybe he was one of those sailors with a girl in every port and therefore had trouble with wine, women and song?
