Over the past several years I've really gotten into watching a lot of documentaries on music (PBS had an excellent one called Soundbreaking) and interviews of important people in music (Dan Rather has done some really good ones on AXSTV).
The other night I watched the Clive Davis - The Soundtrack of Our Lives documentary on Netflix and it was both a great documentary on a man and an illustration on exactly what is wrong with music in America and how the pursuit of pure "hits" has diluted the pursuit of great music into the acceptance of mediocre crap so long as it sells major units.
At one point in the documentary when Davis is pushed out of CBS records and forms his own label, Arista Records, the music he pushed forward into a generational era of pop hits sonically seemed to be regurgitated pablum.
It's just so disappointing to me that all of these truly great artists fall along the wayside while all this junk rises to the top.
