When Nixon did away with the draft, my skin crawled, foreseeing a future dictator, having surrounded himself with military professionals, overseeing an all volunteer force, who by that time formed a community of military families, no longer composed of the boy or girl next door.

Come impeachment or a failed reelection, it will be interesting to see the president's reaction. Will he be as enamored of himself as are the strongmen of South America who declare emergencies in order to stay in power?

My faith in the strength of our democracy to forestall such an outcome fades a little bit more with every defeat of a vote to control gun ownership, with a congress who refuses to compromise, and an ever increasing divisiveness, feeding the fires of separation.
