Peter, that's a multi-decade, multi-generation project, but one that could be successful (bringing gains to those left behind in globalization). Problem is, our 4-year cycles don't lend themselves to taking the long view. If there were a return to some semblance of professional respect and courtesy in the Congress . . . maybe. We've developed such a strong "know- nothing" wing of the Republican Party that I'm not sure any real, "economic" Conservative can be a credible party leader now. Maybe that changes if Trump loses bad enough.

Our debt is such that some combination of stimulus AND tough-guy conservatism with budgets may be required. Maybe a new consensus will start to develop, especially among banking types. But first, I'd like to see HC push through some type of return of Glass-Steagall principles. And I'd like to some intelligent reform of Obamacare (but not chucking the whole thing). Need more competition in drug and health care markets, essentially a conservative plank.
