I'd be curious to see what the counter-argument might be. So far, I've seen several articles like the one you linked, all of which seem to make sense, and all of which seem to be backed by information provided on behalf of songwriters. But what was the argument from the other side? As near as I could gather, it was about simplicity and cost of licensing.
