Icon A night of affirmation and validation with Toni Childs

Our family went to see Toni Childs and her band at the local Entertainment Centre last night. Our youngest daughter (Karina, 14) wasn't all that keen to go - not being familiar with the music or even appreciating Toni's unusual singing style. However, she was won over just like the rest of us. What a fantastic evening and what a special lady!

Looking back at the songs she sang, there were really only three that were 'hits' from the era I knew - "Stop your fussin'", "House of Hope" and the finale "I've got to go now". In fact there was almost more talking/engaging than there was singing and that's what made the show so moving and memorable.

Firstly, she got the men in the audience to stand and after much discussion and direction about grounding and releasing male energy, she honoured them in song. This was followed by calling women up to the stage to sit with her as she sang "You are beautiful" - so powerful and empowering - all 3 Shapland women were entranced.

Toni struggled a little with the high notes - suspect she had a cold as she was constantly sucking lozenges/lollies and drinking water with honey and lemon. This didn't detract at all from her performance and the audience helped her out. It really felt like we were all in it together - a bit like I imagine a charismatic church experience, but where the message was about self-belief and living life to the fullest.

We also saw a short trailer film about her upcoming album and stage show "Citizens of the planet" and she sang a couple of tracks. We'll definitely be going if it comes here.

I've probably failed to capture the magic of the night, but to sum up - Toni - you are beautiful! Thanks for the experience. It was wonderful to get to know you.
