Ask Scott if he thinks the situation for ordinary black Americans has improved in the five decades he’s been commenting on it and he laughs again. “I don’t want to overdo our pain,” he says. “Obama’s important, but he needs help – the mess the last president left is too big a job for anyone.”

As for whether music retains the same importance for him that it used to, he jumps right in for the first time.

“Of course! Music has the power to make me feel good like nothing else does. It gives me some peace for a while. Takes me back to who I really am.”
