The far right keeps using that "infect the world" idea to justify escalated military roles. But every analysis I've seen (and backed up by some limited personal experience traveling in the Middle East) suggests that religious extremist philosophy is losing favor. Of course, the shifts are slow and subtle enough that either side can present a case for itself. But in a war of ideas, he who puts forth the strongest ideas ought to win out over time. If we in the West believe we have better ideas, we need to keep our faith in that more than anything else.
