Stan Getz’s Brazilian fling was both a cursing and a blessing. Sure, it introduced the exotic sounds of Brazilian pop to American audiences, but still to this day Brazilian acts can’t shake the comparisons and labels. Thank god for the Tropicalismo acts of the late 60’s and early 70’s. Turned the whole pretty Brazilian Bossa Nova thing on it’s head. That’s not to say some of them didn’t incorporate or embrace Bossa Nova in their music, they just added a little dirt and poetry to it. If you love the old time music give Bebel Gilberto a spin and see her live. She’s the daughter of Astrud’s former husband and godfather of the Bossa Nova, Joao Gilberto. Just as lovely as the old stuff with some updated beats.
