I guess I’ve oversimplified, having taken it as the approximately 300,000 wounded in Vietnam. & “...driftwood in the pouring rain” is maybe the lot back at home trying (or not trying) to make headway in the midst of a half-assed rigged deck, having born the weight of grief & guilt & pride and sorrows of awful things seen and done … followed by the betrayals, the apathy and ignorance of civilian countrymen and government, discarded like rubble, the stony depths of stoic and aloneness as the sh#t continues to go down with other faces and other places; the pipelines, ...the intrigues; the pain …and the shame …of surrender?
