The local music scene will always survive in the primary & secondary markets, although the venues have declined in number. The bars booking DJ's & Karioki are the same ones who only booked cover bands, never getting near an original artist. And really, a lot of the stuff that came out of Cleveburg\Akron over the past 20 -odd years never saw the inside of a local bar before they signed a contract. NIN, Bone Thugs & Black Keys off the top of my head. I read that their record company demanded that Black Keys go out and play bars for a month or so before they would undewrite the first tour.Trent Reznor was playing in another band(Lucy Pierre if memory serves) while he was recording Pretty Hate Machine during the day at SUMA in Beachwood. When it came out, he took it to a local club he used to frequent and asked the DJ to play it. The DJ Refused, saying they only played national releases, and continued to refuse after being told it was a national release. After it broke, the first thing Reznor did was move to New Orleans.
