Be that as it may, from what I've read many Canadians were caught unaware, thinking they were independent of the Crown.

Truth be told, Oz and Canada are but two of 51 Common Wealth nations, each of whom have a vote in the UN. Each of whom is answerable to the Crown. Which makes roughly 25% of that bodies(UN) voting members British surrogates.
