I think "be repulsed by" is a more apt description than detest. I've known a few Assembly of God folks during my years, and I've often found them to be very nice, personable, and even humble people. That said, it seems clear to me the risk of putting someone with that ideology in a position of power.
It's important to counter the rise of fundamentalists with reason and enlightenment. When we go to things like "detest," I think we actually give them more power. Their feeling of solidarity against the larger world is part of what ties them together.
It's sort of like Islamic fundamentalists. The more you beat on them (while perhaps reducing their numbers), the stronger the core fanatics become in their ways. They have to be "co-opted," and its the same with US-based fundamentalists.
What's sad, to me, is how they seem to be created a bastard hybrid of Christian fundamentalism and American exceptionalism that is miles away from the lessons that one can take from reading the Bible without the literalism.
They've got it exactly backwards, to put it simply.
